Artist Biography
Cecily Flemming is a microbiologist and an artist, residing in Burlington for over 20 years.
“I was born in Niagara in 1962 and grew up on the Niagara Escarpment. Growing up in the country and daughter to an architect and interior designer, I have loved art and nature since I was a girl, “finding joy in slime”, as my dad used to say, and in all living things.
With a meditative, and sometimes euphoric, joy I glimpse and sketch living creatures, which are integral parts in my images as a printmaker. I cherish and represent wildlife in its many breathtaking forms, lines, textures, and colours, using relief block printing and mixed media techniques. As a painter, in watercolours and acrylics, I experience and try to capture the abundant beauty in the rocks, trees, sky and water.
My linoleum block prints of the Nassau groupers were sketched from dive photos of my scuba diving trip in Abaco Bahamas, exploring the Fowl Cay Reef – a magnificent underwater world of bright colours, shapes and patterns. The view of freighters passing by in the distance with waves from the east wind is a common sight in Hamilton and Burlington walking along the shoreline beaches, one of my happy places.
As an artist I make a mark to express my inner experience, a visual joy that flows from the vast natural beauty around me resonating in me.
Thank you for sharing in this with me for a moment or two.”
