(June 26, 2024) — Habitat for Humanity Hamilton is thrilled to announce the completion of two new homes generously donated by New Horizon Development Group. To commemorate this special milestone, a ceremony was held today to present the keys to the two local families, who are now proud homeowners.

This heartening event represents the culmination of a years-long collaborative effort to address the urgent need for affordable housing in Hamilton. The two semi-detached homes, built for Habitat for Humanity Hamilton by New Horizon Development group and their network of construction partners, will provide safe, stable, and affordable housing for these families, transforming their lives and fostering a sense of community and stability. The families toured the finished homes for the first time, and the children celebrated joyously as they finally got to see their own unique bedrooms.

Jeff Paikin, President and co-founder of New Horizon Development Group, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Partnering with Habitat for Humanity Hamilton on this project has been an immensely rewarding experience. We believe in taking action to address the affordable housing crisis in our community, and these homes symbolize our dedication to that cause. It is our honour to help provide these families with a place they can proudly call home.”
Integral to this build is funding from the Government of Canada. Since 2019, the federal government has made a total funding commitment of $938,000 through the Affordable Housing Fund under the National Housing Strategy towards Habitat Hamilton projects, including these homes.
“The Government of Canada in collaboration with partners like Habitat for Humanity is creating safe and affordable housing options for Canadians,” said Chad Collins, Member of Parliament for Hamilton East-Stoney Creek on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “Donating this city-owned property was one of the last motions I submitted as a city councillor. As the Member of Parliament for Hamilton East—Stoney Creek, I am thrilled to see the outcome of our work here in Hamilton, where these two families are celebrating moving into their affordable new homes. I wish them all the happiness and success as they start this new chapter in their lives.”
In March 2023, the Government of Canada and Habitat for Humanity Canada announced an additional $25 million investment to build 500 new affordable homes across Canada over the next three years. This brings the total federal investment in Habitat for Humanity to $80.8 million through the Government of Canada’s Affordable Housing Fund.
